While many experience the Norwegian fjords from the deck of a cruise ship, this tour is for those who prefer to earn their views with their own two feet. It trades passive sightseeing for a demanding, boots-on-the-ground adventure. If you value physical challenge and deep immersion in nature over the comforts of a more relaxed tour, this trek offers an unfiltered and rewarding way to conquer the fjordlands.

The Vikings were some of the toughest people to ever walk this earth, and looking at the land that spawned them, it’s not hard to see why. Carved by the relentless North Atlantic for eons, the Norwegian fjordlands are a challenge that beckons hikers and mountaineers of all ages and abilities. This trip will put you on intimate terms with the great green hills, monstrous peaks, enormous glaciers, and flat-out gorgeous scenery of this isolated chunk of Scandinavia. Lace up your hiking boots and set forth in search of your own personal Valhalla.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 7

Bergen

Arrival in Bergen

Arrive in Bergen, the historic port city and primary gateway to the western fjords. Settle into your accommodation before heading out for an initial walk to get oriented. The city’s core is compact, with the UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf and the bustling fish market providing a clear focal point for exploration.

  • Independent exploration of the city's historic core.
  • Orientation walk to get acquainted with the city layout.
  • Accommodation: Heimen Hotel Bergen (or similar).
Day 2 of 7

Bergen to Odda

Hardangerfjord Crossing to Odda

The day begins with a ferry crossing along the Hardangerfjord, a classic fjordland transit that trades the city for steep, green-sided valleys. The overland journey continues to Odda, a small industrial town positioned deep in the fjord system that serves as the base for the region's major treks. An introductory hike in the afternoon helps to stretch the legs after the travel day and offers the first taste of the terrain to come.

Day at a glance

  • Scenic ferry journey along the Hardangerfjord.
  • Overland transfer to the trekking base in Odda.
  • Introductory hike to acclimatize.
  • Accommodation: Trolltunga Hotel (or similar).
  • Meals: Breakfast.

DIY Reality Check: The transfer from Bergen to Odda presents a classic logistical puzzle for independent travelers. The most direct route is the Skyss bus line 930, a roughly three-hour journey that includes a functional ferry crossing. For the more scenic "classic fjordland transit" via the Hardangerfjord, a DIY traveler must stitch together a multi-part journey on separate operators. This involves booking the Hardangerfjord Express Boat from Bergen to Rosendal, a scenic two-hour trip operated by Rødne. From Rosendal, one must then connect to a Skyss bus (line 760) for the final hour-long leg to Odda. Coordinating these two separate services can be tricky, and while the bus schedule is designed to correspond with some ferry arrivals, there's no guarantee of available seats on the connecting bus. A coordinated trip with a pre-arranged private vehicle and scenic ferry handles all the route planning and logistical connections, ensuring a seamless transit without the risk of a missed connection.

Day 3 of 7

Odda

Buerdalen Valley & Glacier Views

Today is a critical conditioning hike in the Buerdalen valley, a shakedown for the longer Trolltunga trek later in the week. The route covers roughly 10km with a significant 850-950m of elevation gain. The trail begins with a steep, rocky climb to the Strandsfossen waterfall viewpoint before leveling out into a high valley of small lakes and grazing lands. The objective is the view toward the Buer Glacier, a tongue of the larger Folgefonna ice cap. Expect a full day on the trail, typically 7-9 hours, with varied and sometimes technical terrain underfoot.

Day at a glance

  • Full-day conditioning hike in the Buerdalen valley.
  • Distance: 10km with 850-950m of elevation gain.
  • Duration: Approximately 7-9 hours.
  • Views of the Buer Glacier, an arm of the Folgefonna ice cap.
  • Accommodation: Trolltunga Hotel (or similar).
  • Meals: Breakfast.

DIY Reality Check: Accessing the Buerdalen trailhead presents a logistical hurdle for independent travelers based in Odda. Unlike the well-serviced Trolltunga hike, there is no dedicated public shuttle bus to the Buer trailhead. This leaves a DIY hiker with two main options: hire a taxi for the 6-8 kilometer trip or add over an hour of walking each way along the road. The trailhead itself is at the end of a private road, with access managed through an automated parking and toll system that costs 185 NOK per vehicle. For an independent traveler, this means either paying for a rental car and the toll, or coordinating and paying for a taxi in both directions, hoping for return availability from a remote valley. A coordinated trip with pre-arranged transport handles all trailhead logistics, eliminating the extra cost, time, and uncertainty of getting to the start of the hike.
