Day 1 of 8
Phoenix, Arizona
Arrival in the Sonoran Desert
Arrive in Phoenix, the sprawling urban center of the Sonoran Desert. An overland transfer from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) brings you to your hotel in Scottsdale. The remainder of the day is for settling in and acclimatizing to the dry desert air before the journey north into Arizona's high country begins.

DIY Reality Check: Securing appropriate lodging for a family can be a significant logistical hurdle, especially when traveling with multiple children. Most hotels have strict room occupancy limits based on fire codes, and these rules typically count children as part of the total guest count. While some booking platforms allow you to search for multiple rooms, very few can actually guarantee they will be connecting. In fact, less than 10 percent of a typical hotel's rooms may be the adjoining type with an interior door. This often forces families to either book more expensive suites or make multiple calls to a hotel to request, but not guarantee, rooms that are close to each other. A coordinated family journey removes this entire layer of sourcing, vetting, and logistical stress, ensuring the accommodation is settled before you ever leave home.
The day begins with a northbound drive to Montezuma Castle National Monument, a site established in 1906 to preserve its significant Native American heritage. The main structure is a remarkably well-preserved 20-room cliff dwelling, built into a limestone recess by the Sinagua people over 800 years ago. After a picnic lunch, the route continues to Sedona, a town defined by its dramatic red sandstone formations.
The afternoon is spent exploring this landscape via a network of unpaved tracks on a 4x4 vehicle. A local guide can provide context on the area's distinct geology, native flora, and fauna. The drive offers access to viewpoints of iconic buttes and canyons that are otherwise difficult to reach.

Day 3 of 8
Sedona, Arizona
Verde Canyon by Rail
The morning is open for independent exploration of Sedona. The town is a hub for an extensive network of hiking trails that lead into the surrounding canyons and up to exposed slickrock viewpoints. Trails range from easy riverside walks to strenuous climbs, accessing natural bridges, caves, and vortex sites. In the afternoon, travel to Clarkdale to board the Verde Canyon Railroad. This heritage railway follows a 20-mile route to the ghost ranch of Perkinsville and back, a four-hour trip through a protected canyon corridor inaccessible by road. The tracks trace the course of the Verde River, passing under towering rock pinnacles and through a tunnel carved from solid rock in 1912.

DIY Reality Check: While any family can book a ticket on the Verde Canyon Railroad, securing a private car is a different matter entirely. The railroad requires a group of 20 or more people to make a group booking, and private cars seat between 26 and 42 passengers, requiring a charter for the entire coach. A DIY family would otherwise ride in a shared car and must book all tickets under a single reservation to ensure they are seated together. This also leaves the logistical burden of navigating the 40-minute drive from Sedona to the Clarkdale depot and adhering to the strict check-in policy, which can see seats resold to waiting list passengers for those who arrive late. A coordinated trip handles the transport, guarantees seating, and leverages its group size to provide a private rail car experience that is inaccessible to most independent travelers.
