This is the classic approach to the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high glacial basin ringed by peaks over 7,000m. The 10-day trek is a serious physical commitment, with daily elevation changes of 600-1,200m and nights spent in basic mountain tea houses. It's a route for fit, experienced hikers who understand acclimatization and want to tackle a major Himalayan objective without the logistical overhead of a fully independent expedition. The reward is access to the heart of the range, culminating at Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m).

A 15-day trip centered on the classic 10-day tea house trek to Annapurna Base Camp. The route climbs from Pokhara through rhododendron forests and high alpine valleys to the Sanctuary's glacial basin at 4,130m.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 15

Kathmandu

Arrival in Kathmandu

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) and make your way into the city. Settle into your hotel and, depending on your arrival time, head out for an initial orientation. The Thamel neighbourhood is a dense maze of shops, restaurants, and trekking agencies, and a short walk is the best way to get your bearings and acclimatize to the city's energy.

Day at a glance

  • Arrive at any time in Kathmandu
  • Get oriented with a walk around the Thamel district
  • Accommodation: Kantipur Village

DIY Reality Check: While a walk through Thamel is a great orientation, for the independent trekker it’s an immediate business trip. As of 2023, Nepal requires all foreign trekkers in the Annapurna region to be accompanied by a licensed guide hired through a government-registered agency. This means your first task on arrival is to vet and hire an official agency, which is the sole channel for securing your mandatory Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS card. A coordinated trip handles the guide, agency, and all permit paperwork before you even land.

Kathmandu

Temples and Dumplings

A full day in Kathmandu is for acclimatization and preparation. An optional early start involves a climb to Swayambhunath Temple for panoramic city views. Later, a walk through the old city's core leads to Durbar Square, the historical heart of Kathmandu, filled with temples and the palace of the Kumari Devi. The afternoon is a good opportunity to learn a local skill; a cooking demonstration on how to make momos (dumplings) ends with a well-earned lunch.

  • Free time in the afternoon
  • Accommodation: Kantipur Village
Day 3 of 15

Kathmandu to Pokhara

The Road to Pokhara

The day is an overland journey west from the Kathmandu Valley. The Prithivi Highway is the main artery connecting the capital to western Nepal, and the 200km drive takes the better part of the day, typically 8-9 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. As the road winds out of the hills, the first views of the Annapurna Range appear on the horizon. Arriving in Pokhara, a walk along the shore of Phewa Lake in the Lakeside district helps to stretch the legs and scout dinner options.

Day at a glance

  • Overland journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara (200km)
  • Travel time: Approximately 8-9 hours
  • First views of the Annapurna Range
  • Orientation walk of Pokhara's Lakeside area
  • Accommodation: Hotel Queens Park

DIY Reality Check: The overland journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara is a practical lesson in the operational challenges of travel in Nepal. Government travel advisories for Nepal consistently warn of hazardous road conditions, poorly maintained vehicles, and inadequately trained drivers. For the independent traveler, this translates into a difficult choice: navigating chaotic bus parks to find a spot on a tourist bus of uncertain quality, or attempting to vet and hire a private driver from a crowded market where safety standards are not guaranteed. The Prithvi Highway itself is frequently subject to closures from landslides, which can halt traffic for hours or even days, leaving travelers stranded. A coordinated trip using a vetted, private vehicle with a professional driver removes the burden of sourcing safe transport and provides operational support to manage any unforeseen delays along the way.
