This route provides a cross-section of central Nepal's distinct cultural and ecological zones. It moves from the dense, historic urbanism of the Kathmandu Valley to a quieter spiritual context with an overnight stay at a Buddhist monastery in Pharping. The itinerary then descends to the Terai plains for wildlife observation in Chitwan National Park—Nepal's oldest reserve—before climbing to Pokhara. It's a logical progression for travelers interested in the interplay between Nepal's diverse topographies, religions, and ecosystems.

A 10-day circuit through Nepal's central heartland, from the Kathmandu Valley to Chitwan's subtropical lowlands and Pokhara, set against the Annapurna massif.

Day 2 of 10

Kathmandu

Stupas and Palaces of Kathmandu

The day is dedicated to exploring the Kathmandu Valley's key religious and historical sites. The first stop is Bodhnath Stupa, a massive 5th-century mandala that is one of the most significant Tibetan Buddhist sites outside Tibet; pilgrims and monks circumambulate the structure, spinning prayer wheels.

From there, the route continues to Bhaktapur, the region's medieval capital. Its Durbar Square is a dense collection of wood-carved temples, pagodas, and palaces, preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site and offering a window into the city's Malla-dynasty apogee. The local markets are known for ceramics and a distinctive homemade yogurt called *khopa dhau*.

Day 3 of 10

Kathmandu & Pharping

Monkeys, Weavers, and Monastic Life

The morning begins with a climb to Swayambhunath, an ancient stupa complex on a hilltop overlooking Kathmandu, known for its resident population of rhesus macaques. Later, there's an opportunity to learn about the preservation of traditional weaving with a representative from the Himalayan Indigenous Society, focusing on the craft of the Lowa people from Upper Mustang.

The day concludes with a one- to two-hour drive to Pharping, a key Buddhist pilgrimage site south of the city. The night is spent in a monastery guesthouse, offering a direct look at monastic daily life, including evening prayer services. A cooking demonstration focuses on making traditional Nepali *momos*.

Day at a glance

  • Explore Swayambhunath temple complex, also known as the Monkey Temple.
  • Lecture on traditional weaving with the Himalayan Indigenous Society.
  • Overnight stay at Neydo Monastery guesthouse in Pharping.
  • Attend an evening chanting and prayer service with resident monks.
  • Learn to make Nepali dumplings (momos) at a cooking demonstration.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

DIY Reality Check: Arranging a private lecture on the Lowa people's craft requires directly contacting the leadership of the Himalayan Indigenous Society, as the nonprofit does not maintain a public visitor center for walk-in presentations. An independent traveler must then coordinate this niche appointment with securing one of the mere 23 rooms at the Neydo Monastery guesthouse in Pharping and arranging the one- to two-hour transit from Kathmandu to get there. While taxis or ride-sharing apps are an option, the budget alternative is navigating the chaotic Ratna Park bus station for a spot on a potentially standing-room-only local bus. A trip that pre-arranges the exclusive lecture, the monastery booking, and the private point-to-point transport removes these logistical hurdles.
