This is the classic backpacker route through India and Sri Lanka, but without the hassle of booking 38 nights of accommodation and a dozen train tickets. The itinerary is built for social travel, connecting North India's big cultural sites like the Taj Mahal with the party scene in Goa and the surf towns of Sri Lanka's south coast. It's a huge overland trip that covers a ton of ground, best for someone who wants a built-in crew for a long-haul adventure and would rather spend their time meeting people than staring at a bus schedule.

A 39-day overland route from Delhi's chaos to Sri Lanka's south coast, hitting the Taj Mahal, Rajasthan's forts, and Goa's beaches before crossing to the tea hills of Ella and the bars of Hikkaduwa.

What Coordinating This Route Involves

Booking 36 nights of accommodation is one thing; booking them across 23 separate properties for a 39-day run is the real admin. You’d then need to line up 27 transport legs to cover 2,354 km, slot in 39 activities, and plan the two days where a stop is threaded into a transfer. The logistics are solvable with enough spreadsheets, but you can’t book a guaranteed small group to travel with. An organised route handles the admin so you can focus on the social scene, which is the whole point.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 39

Delhi

Arrival in Delhi & Karol Bagh Markets

Land in Delhi, drop your bags at the hotel, and meet the rest of the crew. The first night is a low-key chance to get your bearings; the best move is to head for the electric Karol Bagh market and find a spot for dinner. This trip moves fast, with an early start on Day 2, so don't plan on a deep dive into the city tonight.

Day 2 of 39

Delhi/Āgra

Train to Agra & the Taj Mahal

It's an early start for the morning train to Agra, a two-to-three-hour ride through arid terrain and small towns. After arriving, the main event is the Taj Mahal. You'll have plenty of time to explore the white marble mausoleum and its grounds, getting the classic photos and learning its history. For those with extra energy, the less-crowded Agra Fort and the tomb known as the 'Baby Taj' are solid optional stops for the afternoon.

Āgra/Jaipur

The Pink City of Jaipur

Today's a bus day, heading west to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Known as the 'Pink City' for its sandstone-hued buildings, it’s a full-on sensory experience. After dropping your bags, the easiest way to dive in is on a cycle rickshaw into the old city's markets. An orientation walk helps get your bearings amid the stalls. For the evening, you could track down the City Palace, visit the Jantar Mantar observatory, or catch a Bollywood film at the massive Raj Mandir Cinema.
