This route is designed for travelers who know Jordan's highlights but want to connect them with a higher level of craft and lower logistical friction. Instead of a standard hotel circuit, the itinerary builds around a stay at the candlelit Feynan Ecolodge in the Dana Biosphere Reserve and uses the less-trafficked back trail for the approach to Petra. It solves the main challenge of a Jordanian road trip: securing quality guides and private transport between disparate sites like Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea, without sacrificing independence.

A nine-day route from Amman to the Dead Sea, linking the Roman ruins of Jerash with a stay at the remote Feynan Ecolodge, a back-trail hike into Petra, and a night in Wadi Rum's desert.

Day 2 of 9

Ajloun & Jerash

Roman Ruins and Olive Groves

The day begins with a drive north of Amman to the 12th-century Ajloun Castle. From the fortress, a one-hour hike follows dirt paths through terraced valleys filled with old olive groves and active farms, a direct look at the region’s agricultural landscape. After a stop at the nearby ruins of Mar Elias Church, traditionally known as the prophet Elijah's birthplace, the route continues to the town of Souf for lunch at Beit Khayrat Souf, a café run and operated by a team of local women.

The afternoon is dedicated to Jerash, one of the most complete Roman provincial cities in the Middle East. A few hours are needed to walk its colonnaded streets, public squares, and hilltop temples. The day concludes with the two- to two-and-a-half-hour drive back to Amman for a free evening.

Day at a glance

  • Hike from Ajloun Castle through terraced valleys and centuries-old olive groves.
  • Visit the Byzantine ruins of Mar Elias Church.
  • Lunch at Beit Khayrat Souf, a women-run café and community project in Souf.
  • Guided exploration of the well-preserved Roman city of Jerash (3-4 hours).
  • Overnight at the Landmark Amman Hotel.
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

DIY Reality Check: Replicating this day's four-part itinerary—linking Ajloun Castle, a rural hike, a community lunch in Souf, and the sprawling Jerash ruins—presents a significant logistical challenge for an independent traveler. Public buses between towns run without fixed schedules, often waiting to depart until completely full, making a multi-stop trip in one day impractical. The most common alternative, hiring a private car and driver for a custom tour, requires sourcing a reliable operator and negotiating a complex route, with standard day rates for a simpler Jerash-Ajloun loop often costing 90-120 JD. Furthermore, many hiking trails around Ajloun require a local guide to navigate, adding another layer of coordination. A trip that arranges the multi-leg transport, a guide for the trail, and the community lunch in advance removes these operational burdens entirely.

Day 3 of 9

Amman

Citadel Views and Market Flavours

Today works through Amman's history and street-level culture. The morning starts at the Citadel, an archeological site towering over the city, before descending to the restored 6,000-seat Roman Amphitheatre. From there, the focus shifts to a walking tour of the downtown souks, navigating the vibrant stalls of the spice, vegetable, and gold markets.

Lunch is a progressive meal sampled from the city's best-known food stalls, including Hashem for falafel, local shops for olives and pickles, and Habiba Pastries for kunafa. The day's organized activities conclude with a visit to a local Bedouin family for a rare glimpse into their daily life, followed by a free evening to explore Amman independently.

Day at a glance

  • Guided visit to Amman's Citadel and the 2nd-century Roman Amphitheatre.
  • Walking tour through the city's downtown markets.
  • Local food tour including Hashem for falafel and Habiba Pastries for kunafa.
  • Afternoon visit with a local Bedouin family for coffee and conversation.
  • Overnight at the Landmark Amman Hotel.
  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

DIY Reality Check: While Amman's major historical sites are straightforward for an independent traveler to visit, arranging an authentic, respectful visit with a local Bedouin family is not. These experiences are built on trust and relationships, often facilitated by community-based tourism enterprises that partner with specific families to ensure the interaction is genuine and not performative. Unlike booking a hotel, there is no public portal for a tourist to spontaneously request coffee in a private family home; access is almost exclusively pre-arranged through established local partners. A coordinated trip that includes this type of managed cultural exchange handles the sensitive vetting and logistics, providing access to a personal connection that would otherwise be inaccessible.
