The Route, Day by Day
Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.
From Roman Ruins to Petra's Gates
Land in Amman early—like, before sunrise early. This trip kicks off straight away with a drive north to the Roman ruins of Jerash. You'll spend a few hours walking the colonnaded streets before the main event: a three-hour overland journey south to Wadi Musa, the town outside Petra. Drop your bags at the hotel, meet the rest of the crew, and find some dinner. The real exploration starts tomorrow.

Day at a glance
- Note: Requires a very early arrival in Amman (before 6:00 am) for the 9:00 am departure.
- Guided tour of the well-preserved Roman archaeological site of Jerash.
- Overland journey from the Amman area to Wadi Musa (approx. 3-4 hours).
- Settle into your hotel near the entrance to Petra.
- Accommodation: Nomads Petra hotel.
DIY Reality Check: The day’s overland route presents a significant logistical challenge for a DIY traveler. The journey from Queen Alia Airport (south of Amman) to Jerash (to the north) is over an hour's drive, and the subsequent leg from Jerash down to Wadi Musa is another 3.5 hours. Public transport is unworkable for this schedule, requiring multiple transfers and taking over five hours for the Jerash-to-Petra segment alone. This forces an independent traveler, immediately after an overnight flight, to find and negotiate a full-day private transfer for a complex, three-point route, including a multi-hour wait at Jerash. A pre-booked trip with a dedicated vehicle and driver for the entire day sidesteps this entire coordination challenge.
The Backdoor Hike into Petra
Forget the main entrance. Today's plan is to hike into Petra via the 'backdoor' trail, starting from the smaller, quieter site of Little Petra. It's a solid trek that brings you out high above the main valley, with a first look at the massive Monastery carved into the cliff. After a packed lunch with a view, you'll explore the rest of the ancient city, walking down through the site and eventually exiting via the famous Siq.
The afternoon is free to chill on the hotel rooftop or find a local spot for dinner in Wadi Musa. It's a long day on your feet, so plan accordingly.

Day at a glance
- Hike the ancient backdoor trail from Little Petra to the Monastery (13km, approx. 5-7 hours).
- Explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra, including the Siq and Treasury.
- Visit the carved sandstone alleys of Siq al-Barid (Little Petra).
- Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.
- Accommodation: Nomads Petra hotel.
DIY Reality Check: Executing the point-to-point Backdoor Trail requires a DIY traveler to solve a multi-step logistical puzzle before taking a single step on the hike. The journey begins by arranging one-way transport from Wadi Musa to the trailhead at Little Petra, a choice between negotiating a taxi fare (around 10-15 JOD) or navigating the variable schedule of the free public shuttle. Upon arrival, another transaction is needed to hire a 4x4 jeep for 5 JOD to reach the advanced trailhead, bypassing several kilometers of the initial walk. Finally, hikers must still purchase their 50 JOD Petra entrance ticket at the Little Petra office, a required step before being allowed past the trail's checkpoint. A pre-organized trip with a dedicated vehicle and guide handles the entire transport chain and all ticketing, sidestepping this sequence of coordination and cash transactions.
Petra Sunrise & Desert Camp
It's an early start for a return to Petra, this time to see the Treasury lit up by the first light of sunrise—the best time to see it without the crowds. After breakfast back at the hotel, you'll trade the city for the desert on the two-hour drive to Wadi Rum. From there, it's into a 4x4 to cross the red sand dunes and rock formations to reach a Bedouin-style camp for the night. After a group dinner, a short walk out into the dunes reveals a sky with practically zero light pollution.
