Jordan: Petra, Wadi Rum & the Dead Sea

Arrive at any time in Amman, the capital of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The city is a sprawling collection of neighborhoods with limited pedestrian infrastructure, making taxis the most practical way to navigate between its ancient sites and modern districts. Settle in before the journey begins in earnest.

The day begins with an overland drive north to Jerash, one of the best-preserved provincial Roman cities in the empire. The site's scale is impressive, with colonnaded avenues, two large theatres, and the vast Oval Plaza still intact. After exploring the ruins, lunch is at a nearby women-run café, which offers a hands-on cooking class focused on traditional Jordanian dishes.

The afternoon is spent back in Amman atop Jabal al-Qal'a, the Citadel hill. This site has been continuously inhabited for millennia, bearing layers from the Bronze Age through the Roman and Umayyad periods. The Jordan Archaeological Museum here provides crucial context for the country's historical timeline, before exploring the Citadel's own ruins, including the prominent Temple of Hercules.

The route turns south, tracing the ancient King's Highway, a trade artery that has linked the region for more than 3,000 years. The first stop is Mount Nebo, the windswept promontory from which the Hebrew Bible states Moses viewed the Promised Land. The summit, at 817 meters, offers a panoramic view across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. The journey continues to Madaba, a town known for its collection of Byzantine-era mosaics. The highlight is the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, preserved on the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. It is the oldest known geographic floor mosaic in art history. From Madaba, the scenic drive continues south along the King's Highway to Wadi Musa, the modern town adjacent to Petra. The day ends with accommodation at the Petra Moon Hotel.

An early start provides the best light for entering Petra. The approach is a masterstroke of defensive and dramatic architecture: a 1.2-kilometer walk through the Siq, a narrow slot canyon whose sandstone walls rise 80 meters. The path opens directly onto the facade of Al-Khazneh, the Treasury, carved from the rock face in the 1st century AD.

A guided walk introduces the city's main monuments, including the Street of Facades, the Roman-style Theatre, and the Colonnaded Street. The Nabataean capital is vast, and after the initial orientation, the afternoon is free for independent exploration. The climb to Ad-Deir (the Monastery) is strenuous but rewards with another monumental facade and commanding views.

From Petra, the road continues south into the protected desert wilderness of Wadi Rum. This landscape of weathered sandstone mountains and red-hued dunes was famously described by T.E. Lawrence as "vast, echoing and God-like." After settling into a desert camp, a 4x4 vehicle provides access to the deeper parts of the valley, navigating ancient riverbeds to find Nabataean petroglyphs and dramatic rock bridges.

The excursion is timed to find a high vantage point for sunset over the immense landscape. Back at camp, dinner is a traditional Bedouin feast, often cooked underground in a 'zarb'. The day concludes with a walk away from the camp's lights, where a Bedouin guide explains the star-filled desert sky, unpolluted by modern light.

The journey turns north from the desert towards the Dead Sea, the lowest point of exposed land on Earth at over 400 meters below sea level. En route, a stop at a community kitchen in the Jordan Valley provides lunch and insight into local agricultural life. From there, the road descends to the shoreline, where the air grows thick and warm.

The Dead Sea's extreme salinity, nearly ten times that of the ocean, creates a unique environment where no macroscopic life can survive. This hyper-salinity makes the water incredibly dense, allowing for effortless floating. The mineral-rich mud along the shore is used for therapeutic skin treatments, a practice dating back to antiquity. The rest of the day is for experiencing these natural phenomena.

The morning is dedicated to visiting Bethany Beyond the Jordan (Al-Maghtas), a UNESCO World Heritage site on the east bank of the Jordan River. Archaeological work since the 1990s has uncovered extensive Roman and Byzantine remains, including churches, baptismal pools, and a monastery complex. This is believed to be the site where John the Baptist lived and where Jesus was baptized.

The visit follows a pathway through the tamarisk trees of the river floodplain to the baptismal site itself. After exploring the archaeological park, the route climbs back out of the Jordan Valley for the final overland journey to Amman, completing the circuit of the country.

The journey concludes in Amman. There are no planned activities for the day, allowing for departure at any time. Hotel check-out is typically in the morning, with luggage storage available for those with later flights.
