Pyramids, Sphinx, and Saqqara

The day is dedicated to the foundational monuments of the Old Kingdom. The itinerary begins at the Giza Plateau, confronting the colossal scale of the Great Pyramids and the enigmatic Sphinx. From the plateau, the route shifts to the countryside to visit the Nawaya project, a community-run initiative focused on reviving Egypt's agricultural heritage and empowering local women. A farm-to-table lunch prepared by the community offers direct insight into their work.

The afternoon is spent at the necropolis of Saqqara, the burial ground for the ancient capital of Memphis. Here, the focus is the Step Pyramid of Djoser—the first pyramid ever constructed, dating to the 27th century BCE—and the Mastaba of Mereruka, whose intricate reliefs offer a remarkably preserved document of daily life during the Sixth Dynasty.

From Cairo to the Nubian South

An early morning flight connects Cairo with Aswān, the southern gateway to ancient Nubia. Upon arrival, a small ferry crosses the Nile's reservoir to Agilkia Island, the current home of the Philae Temple complex. Originally located on an island submerged by the construction of the High Dam, this Ptolemaic sanctuary dedicated to the goddess Isis was meticulously relocated in a major UNESCO campaign in the 1970s. After exploring its colonnades and pylons, you board the river vessel that will serve as your base for the next few days.

The afternoon is spent on the water, sailing a traditional wooden felucca to Elephantine Island.
