This is a highlights reel of China's most recognized sites, compressed into a single week. The route connects three distinct regions—Beijing, Xi'an, and Chengdu—that are otherwise separated by long-haul train rides or flights. It's a logistical puzzle solved for travelers who are short on time but want to cover the Great Wall, the Terracotta Warriors, and the panda research centers without spending weeks on the ground. The pace is quick, with travel days connecting the three main stops.

A fast-paced, seven-day route through China's historic heart, from Beijing's Great Wall to the Terracotta Army in Xi'an and the panda reserves of Chengdu.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 7

Beijing

Arrival in the Northern Capital

Arrive in Beijing at any time. Settle into your hotel and then head out for an initial walk to get your bearings. The area around most central hotels is dense with restaurants, shops, and services like ATMs. A short exploration is enough for the first day; the real sightseeing starts tomorrow.

Day at a glance

  • Arrive in Beijing and make your way to the hotel.
  • Evening orientation walk to get acquainted with the local neighborhood.
  • Accommodation: Dong Fang Hotel Beijing (or similar).

DIY Reality Check: Many digital tools essential for independent travel are blocked in China, including Google services like Maps and Gmail, as well as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. A DIY traveler landing in Beijing can find themselves immediately cut off from their navigation, booking confirmations, and main communication channels. While a VPN is a common workaround, these are also regulated, and installing one is best done before arrival as the provider websites are often inaccessible from within the country. A coordinated arrival with a local guide waiting sidesteps this entire digital dead end.

Day 2 of 7

Beijing

Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City

The day starts with two of Beijing's monumental sites: Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. Expect crowds and significant walking to cover the grounds of the former imperial palace, which served as the heart of Chinese power for 500 years. The afternoon is free for independent exploration. Options include getting lost in the city's historic *hutongs* (narrow alleys), or taking the metro to visit the Temple of Heaven, the Drum and Bell Towers, or the sprawling Summer Palace.

Day at a glance

  • Explore the immense Tiananmen Square, the symbolic center of Chinese power.
  • Visit the Forbidden City, the former imperial palace for five centuries.
  • Free afternoon to see the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, or historic hutongs.
  • Accommodation: Dong Fang Hotel Beijing (or similar).

DIY Reality Check: One constraint is easy to miss: post-pandemic rules cut the Forbidden City's daily capacity from 80,000 visitors to 30,000, and tickets routinely sell out — acutely so in summer. Entry is by timed, name-registered ticket bought in advance, so an independent traveler who arrives without one is not getting in that day. Having the timed entry secured in advance turns the centrepiece of the day from a gamble into a fixed point.

Day 3 of 7

Beijing / Xi'an

The Great Wall and an Overnight Train

A full day dedicated to the Great Wall. The journey north from Beijing to the Mutianyu section takes about two and a half hours. This well-preserved segment winds across forested ridges, offering classic views from its 22 watchtowers. Plan for a 5km walk along the ramparts, which takes 2-3 hours depending on your pace. The return drive to Beijing gets you to the station in time for the overnight train south to Xi'an, a 1200km journey.
