China: Bike Rides & Village Walks

Land in Chengdu, get yourself to the hostel, and drop your bags. You'll meet the rest of the crew in the evening for a quick walk to get your bearings before heading out for the first night in the city. It's a good chance to get oriented before the real travel begins.

Time to trade Chengdu's sprawl for the mountains. A late morning bullet train gets you to Guilin, followed by a one-and-a-half to two-hour overland journey that drops you right in Yangshuo. Once you've checked in, there's a quick orientation walk around this backpacker hub to figure out the lay of the land before the sun sets over the river.

Today is all about exploring the countryside on two wheels. You'll cycle out of town, following a guide past rice paddies and water buffalo, with the limestone karst peaks framing the entire view. The route is mostly flat and covers about 10km. The ride breaks for lunch at a local family's home for a meal made with fresh produce, a solid change of pace from city restaurants. You'll be back in Yangshuo by the afternoon, leaving the evening free to find a bar on West Street or just chill by the river.

Yangshuo is yours for the day. You can organize a trip to a tea farm, take a cooking class, or even try a Tai Chi or Kung Fu lesson. If you'd rather just explore, the town is small enough to cover on foot. It's another travel day, heading south from the mountains to the massive port city of Guangzhou. The morning starts with a transfer back to the station for the bullet train. After checking into the hotel, you'll head out for a walk through the city. The route covers the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall with its intricate carvings and the colonial-era architecture of Shamian Island. For the evening, you can organize a boat cruise on the Pearl River to see the skyline lit up, or just dive into the city's famous food scene.

This is a serious travel day, so get your playlists and podcasts ready. You're heading deep into Fujian province, a journey that involves a long bullet train ride to Longyan followed by another overland transfer into the countryside. The destination is worth the effort: a traditional Hakka 'tulou,' or earthen house. These are huge, circular fortified buildings where entire clans have lived for centuries. You'll be staying in one for the next two nights, a pretty unique experience far from the usual tourist circuit.

You'll wake up inside the thick walls of the tulou. The morning starts with a walk around the Hakka cultural village to get a sense of the scale of these structures and how they connect. After that, the afternoon is free. Your best move is to just wander, observe daily life, and maybe try to chat with some of the local families who have lived in these homes for generations. It’s a low-key day, a good chance to see a side of rural China that most travelers miss completely.

Time to trade the quiet countryside for the neon glow of Shanghai. It's a full-on travel day, starting with a shuttle from the village and connecting to a high-speed train that will rocket you towards the coast. Charge everything you own and have snacks ready. You’ll arrive in Shanghai in the evening, a city with a totally different energy from anywhere else in China, ready to cap off the trip.

The last full day is a dive into Shanghai. It starts with a walk along the Bund, the famous waterfront promenade with its colonial-era buildings facing the futuristic Pudong skyline. From there, you'll head into the narrow lanes of Shanghai's Old Town. The afternoon is free to tackle your own list—maybe the serene Yuyuan Garden, the chaotic shopping of Nanjing Road, or just tracking down some of the city's best street food. It all wraps up with one last big night out with the group to finish the trip.
