This isn't your standard big-city China circuit. The route starts in Chengdu and ends in Shanghai, but the real point is the time spent in between. It's a path for anyone who wants to see the rice paddies and karst mountains of the countryside without spending weeks figuring out the bus schedules. You'll get the megacity bookends, but the core of the trip is about slowing down for village walks in Yongding and bike rides around Yangshuo. It’s a solid mix of high-energy nights and quiet rural days.

A 10-day route from Chengdu's megacity buzz to Shanghai's skyline, with a deep dive into rural China. Expect bike rides through Yangshuo's karst peaks and a look at the Hakka Houses in Yongding.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 10

Chengdu

Arrival in Chengdu

Land in Chengdu, get yourself to the hostel, and drop your bags. You'll meet the rest of the crew in the evening for a quick walk to get your bearings before heading out for the first night in the city. It's a good chance to get oriented before the real travel begins.

  • Accommodation: Poshpacker Local Tea Hostel
  • Evening orientation walk around the neighbourhood
  • First night out with the group in Chengdu

DIY Reality Check: Upon landing in Chengdu, the first instinct for many travelers is to use their phone to navigate to their hotel or message family, but this is where the operational reality of China's internet filtering system becomes immediately apparent. The "Great Firewall" blocks access to the entire Google suite—including Maps, Gmail, and Translate—as well as common communication apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). While workarounds like VPNs exist, their download sites are often blocked within China, meaning they must be installed and tested *before* arrival. This digital barrier can leave an unprepared DIY traveler effectively stranded and unable to access their usual tools right at the start of their trip, a friction point that is sidestepped when critical pre-departure information is part of the package.

Day 2 of 10

Chengdu to Yangshuo

Bullet Train to the Mountains

Time to trade Chengdu's sprawl for the mountains. A late morning bullet train gets you to Guilin, followed by a one-and-a-half to two-hour overland journey that drops you right in Yangshuo. Once you've checked in, there's a quick orientation walk around this backpacker hub to figure out the lay of the land before the sun sets over the river.

Day at a glance

  • High-speed bullet train from Chengdu to Guilin
  • Overland journey to Yangshuo (approx. 1.5-2 hours)
  • Orientation walk through the riverside city of Yangshuo
  • Accommodation: Floral Hotel Memorize Scene (Baina Hotel)
Day 3 of 10

Yangshuo

Cycling Through Karst Landscapes

Today is all about exploring the countryside on two wheels. You'll cycle out of town, following a guide past rice paddies and water buffalo, with the limestone karst peaks framing the entire view. The route is mostly flat and covers about 10km. The ride breaks for lunch at a local family's home for a meal made with fresh produce, a solid change of pace from city restaurants. You'll be back in Yangshuo by the afternoon, leaving the evening free to find a bar on West Street or just chill by the river.

Day at a glance

  • Guided cycle tour through Yangshuo's countryside (10km)
  • Ride past rice paddies and karst mountain scenery
  • Included lunch at a local family's home
  • Accommodation: Floral Hotel Memorize Scene (Baina Hotel)

DIY Reality Check: While renting a bike in Yangshuo seems straightforward, it exposes the independent traveler to a market where scams are a known risk. A common scheme involves a shop demanding a passport as a deposit, then claiming fictitious damage and holding the document hostage for a high fee. Beyond sourcing a reliable bike, navigating the web of countryside paths is a significant hurdle; standard mapping apps are blocked or unreliable on the necessary village trails, and payment for rentals often requires local apps like Alipay or WeChat Pay, not cash. The day's included lunch in a local family's home is an experience based on pre-existing relationships, not a service easily booked by an individual traveler. A fully coordinated day trip with vetted vendors and a pre-arranged community meal sidesteps these logistical and financial frictions entirely.
