Tibet Overland: Chengdu to Kathmandu via Everest

Arrive at any time in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan. This is the staging point for the overland journey into Tibet. The first day is for settling in; drop your bags and find a local spot for dinner to get a first taste of the city's famous cuisine.

A morning flight from Chengdu brings you to Lhasa, the heart of the Tibetan Autonomous Region. The immediate challenge is the altitude—Lhasa sits at 3,656 meters. After transferring from the airport, the best approach is a slow orientation walk through the city to begin acclimatizing to the thin air.

The day begins at Jokhang Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the spiritual core of Tibetan Buddhism. From there, follow the ancient pilgrimage path of Barkhor Street, which circles the temple and serves as a bustling market. The afternoon is free to explore the Tibetan Quarter, perhaps stopping at a local teahouse for lunch. In the evening, a hands-on cooking class offers a chance to learn how to make traditional Tibetan food like momos.

Start with a visit to the Potala Palace, the iconic fortress that served as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas for over 300 years. The vast complex is a monument of Tibetan architecture. In the afternoon, head to Sera Monastery, one of Lhasa's great university monasteries. If the timing is right, you can witness the monks engaging in their famous courtyard debates, a dynamic and vocal practice used to sharpen their understanding of Buddhist philosophy.

The overland journey west begins with a spectacular drive to Gyantse. The route crosses three high passes, each topping 5,000 meters, and skirts the shore of the brilliant Yamdrok Tso, a turquoise freshwater lake considered sacred. En route, there are stops to see the lake and the massive Karola Glacier. The drive itself is the day's main event, a full-day affair through the high-altitude landscape of central Tibet. Arrive in Gyantse with enough time for a short walk to get your bearings.

In Gyantse, the morning is for exploring the Pelkor Chode Monastery and the Gyantse Kumbum, a unique multi-storied stupa with 108 chapels. Afterwards, a short drive brings you to Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. The main focus here is the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. It's a sprawling, active complex where you can watch hundreds of devotees making their kora, or meditative circuit, around the monastery walls.

A relatively short three-hour drive continues the westward push from Shigatse to Sakya. This small town is dominated by the formidable Sakya Monastery, a massive fortress-like structure with a unique grey, white, and red striped facade. After visiting the monastery and the nearby nunnery, the rest of the day is open. The town is small enough to explore on foot.

The route turns south toward the Himalayas and the ultimate destination: Everest. The drive climbs to the high plateau, ending near the Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world. From here, a short walk leads to a viewpoint for the north face of Mount Everest. The night is spent in a basic guesthouse or, weather and season permitting, a traditional yak hair tent. This is a rustic experience, designed to get as close as possible to the mountain. Be aware that the area can close without warning.

After a final morning look at Everest, the journey traces the route back out of the national park before turning south on a long drive towards the Nepal border. The destination is Kyirong, a town known for its relatively warmer climate and greener landscape. The five-to-six-hour drive involves a significant descent in altitude, with the arid Tibetan plateau giving way to forested valleys as you near the border.

This is a major travel day defined by the Kyirong-Rasuwa border crossing. After clearing Chinese emigration, you walk across a bridge to the Nepalese immigration post. This crossing is a key commercial artery and can be busy, so expect potential delays. Once in Nepal, the road to Kathmandu is a winding, bumpy, and dramatic nine-to-ten-hour drive. The route descends through the Himalayan foothills, offering a completely different perspective from the Tibetan side.

A morning excursion heads out to Bhaktapur, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the three former kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley. Known as the 'City of Devotees,' its three main squares are filled with temples, shrines, and intricate wood-carved palaces. After exploring the well-preserved old town, the afternoon is free back in Kathmandu. A walk through the city's own Durbar Square reveals the Kumari Chowk, home to Nepal's living goddess.

The overland route from Chengdu to Kathmandu concludes today. There are no planned activities, leaving the day free for packing and making your way to Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure at any time.
