Imperial Beijing: Temples and Palaces

The day begins at the Temple of Heaven, a vast Ming dynasty complex where emperors performed rites for good harvests. After a classic Beijing lunch of Peking duck, the afternoon is dedicated to the city's political and imperial center.

A visit to Tiananmen Square—a site of immense scale and contested 20th-century history—precedes entry into the Forbidden City. This vast palace complex, home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties, was closed to commoners for 500 years and its courtyards and halls offer a direct look into China's imperial past.

The Great Wall at Jinshanling

The route heads overland from Beijing to the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall, a segment known for its well-preserved state and dense concentration of watchtowers. This area, dating largely to the Ming dynasty, was a critical defense line against northern nomadic tribes.
