Tanzania Safari Experience

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the primary gateway to Tanzania's northern safari circuit. An overland transfer brings you to your hotel in Arusha, a city situated at the base of Mount Meru. The day is for settling in and acclimatizing before the safari begins.

The route heads west from Arusha to Mto wa Mbu, a settlement whose population represents more than 100 of Tanzania’s tribal groups. A guided walk through the town offers a look at its market, farms, and artisan workshops, followed by a traditional lunch with a local family. From there, the road climbs to the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

The afternoon is dedicated to a safari drive in Lake Manyara National Park. The park's ecosystem is defined by its alkaline lake, which attracts vast flocks of flamingos, and a dense groundwater forest. It is one of the few places known for its population of tree-climbing lions, which are often spotted resting in the branches of acacia trees. The game drive runs about two to three hours in the 4x4.

The overland journey traces the Rift Valley, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area en route to the Serengeti. A key stop is the Olduvai Gorge, a 48-kilometre-long ravine that remains one of the world's most significant paleoanthropological sites. Here, paleoanthropologists Louis and Mary Leakey unearthed hominid fossils dating back millions of years; a visit to the site's museum and visitor's centre provides critical context on early human evolution. From the gorge, the 220-kilometre route continues onto the vast, acacia-dotted plains of Serengeti National Park. The name derives from the Maasai word siringet, translating to 'endless plains'. A late afternoon safari drive upon entering the park offers an initial opportunity to observe the region's immense herds of grazing animals and the attendant predators. Expect five to six hours of travel and game viewing along the route before arriving at the Serengeti Tortilis Camps.

A full day is dedicated to exploring the Serengeti ecosystem, with morning and afternoon safari drives in a 4x4 vehicle. The park's biodiversity is staggering, and these game drives offer opportunities to search for the resident wildlife and locate the 'big five'—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—as well as the complex web of species they coexist with. The timing and routes of the drives are adapted to animal movements and recent sightings within the park. The route also includes a visit to the Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre, which serves as the operational base for most scientific projects within the park. Accommodation is provided at the Serengeti Tortilis Camps, with meals including breakfast, lunch, and dinner served during the day.

After a final morning drive in the Serengeti, the route turns southeast toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The centerpiece is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact and unfilled volcanic caldera, formed when a massive volcano collapsed on itself some two to three million years ago. The crater floor, spanning roughly 260 square kilometers, has become a self-contained sanctuary for an estimated 25,000 large animals.

A 4x4 vehicle descends the steep track to the crater floor for a full-day safari. The unique environment supports a high density of predators and is one of the most reliable places in East Africa to see the endangered black rhinoceros. Lunch is a picnic on the crater floor, surrounded by the resident wildlife, before ascending to the rim for the night. Bring extra layers — the camp sits at high altitude and nights and early mornings turn cold.

The journey east from Ngorongoro includes a stop at a Maasai village in the Monduli District to learn directly about the Clean Cookstoves Project. This community initiative works to replace traditional open-fire cooking with safer, more efficient stoves. The project's goals include reducing respiratory illnesses caused by indoor smoke and lessening the daily burden of firewood collection. The traditional homes, known as bomas, show how the new stoves are built and used, which provides a grounded perspective on the intersection of conservation, public health, and cultural practice in the region. The final 200-kilometre overland journey back to Arusha concludes the main safari circuit, with overnight accommodation at the Kibo Palace Hotel.

The safari expedition concludes in Arusha. The day is unstructured, allowing for independent departure at any time. Transfers to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for onward flights can be arranged from the hotel.
