This route traces Tanzania's classic Northern Circuit, a seven-day loop through some of the most significant wildlife and paleoanthropological sites on Earth. The itinerary moves from the alkaline flats of Lake Manyara National Park to the vast grasslands of the Serengeti, before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera with extraordinary wildlife density. Beyond wildlife viewing, the route allows for engagement with local Maasai communities and a visit to the Olduvai Gorge, a site that has yielded hominid fossils dating back nearly two million years.

A seven-day safari circuit through northern Tanzania's iconic ecosystems, from the Serengeti plains to the Ngorongoro Crater, with a focus on wildlife ecology and Maasai cultural engagement.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 7

Arusha

Arrival in Arusha

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), the primary gateway to Tanzania's northern safari circuit. An overland transfer brings you to your hotel in Arusha, a city situated at the base of Mount Meru. The day is for settling in and acclimatizing before the safari begins.

Day at a glance

  • Arrival transfer from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) is included
  • Settle in and prepare for the upcoming safari expedition
  • Accommodation: Kibo Palace Hotel

DIY Reality Check: Taxis at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) are not metered, requiring travelers to negotiate fares for the roughly one-hour drive to Arusha after a long flight. Initial quotes from drivers can be significantly inflated, capitalizing on traveler fatigue and unfamiliarity with the local rates. While shared shuttles offer a cheaper alternative, they involve uncertain wait times for the vehicle to fill and make multiple stops, extending the journey. With no direct public transport serving the airport, a pre-arranged transfer with a vetted driver and a fixed price eliminates the need to haggle for a safe ride upon arrival. The arrival transfer covers about 10 kilometres from the airport, and the group size is capped at six travellers — small enough to share a single 4x4 with the National Geographic Expedition Leader.

Day 2 of 7

Lake Manyara National Park

Rift Valley & Lake Manyara Wildlife

The route heads west from Arusha to Mto wa Mbu, a settlement whose population represents more than 100 of Tanzania’s tribal groups. A guided walk through the town offers a look at its market, farms, and artisan workshops, followed by a traditional lunch with a local family. From there, the road climbs to the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

The afternoon is dedicated to a safari drive in Lake Manyara National Park. The park's ecosystem is defined by its alkaline lake, which attracts vast flocks of flamingos, and a dense groundwater forest. It is one of the few places known for its population of tree-climbing lions, which are often spotted resting in the branches of acacia trees. The game drive runs about two to three hours in the 4x4.

Day 3 of 7

Serengeti National Park

Olduvai Gorge & The Serengeti Plains

Today's drive traces the Rift Valley, passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area en route to the Serengeti. A key stop is the Olduvai Gorge, a 48-km long ravine that is one of the world's most important paleoanthropological sites. Here, National Geographic-sponsored archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey unearthed hominid fossils dating back millions of years. A visit to the site's museum provides critical context on early human evolution.

From the gorge, the journey continues onto the vast, acacia-dotted plains of Serengeti National Park. The name comes from the Maasai word *siringet*, meaning 'endless plains'. A late afternoon safari drive offers the first chance to see the park's immense herds of grazing animals and the predators that follow them, set against the landscape's dramatic scale. Expect five to six hours in the 4x4 today, with stops for game viewing along the way.
