The Route, Day by Day
Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.
Arrival in Arusha
The route begins with an arrival into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). An overland transfer leads to a hotel situated in the foothills of Mount Meru, providing a quiet base to acclimate to the East African climate and altitude before the expedition properly commences.

Conservation & Tarangire's Elephants
The day's intellectual framework is set by a conservationist from African People & Wildlife, an organization co-founded by National Geographic Explorer Dr. Laly Lichtenfeld that focuses on human-wildlife coexistence. This context informs the subsequent overland journey south to Tarangire National Park, a landscape defined by ancient baobab trees and the country's largest elephant population. The park's relative obscurity compared to the Serengeti means fewer vehicles and a different quality of observation.
The initial approach to the park is a game drive in itself, scanning the savannah for giraffe, lion, and a high density of birdlife en route to the lodge. A dedicated afternoon safari drive follows, exploring the bush as the light softens and nocturnal species begin to stir, before returning to the lodge for the night.

Lions & Maasai Coexistence
The route ascends from Tarangire's dry plains into the cooler, forested highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The day's work focuses on the KopeLion project, a conservation initiative supported by the National Geographic Society that partners with local Maasai communities to mitigate human-lion conflict. Access is provided to the project's field staff, who demonstrate their work fostering coexistence between pastoralists and predators.
A visit to a nearby Maasai *boma*, or homestead, offers a direct perspective on the practical realities of living alongside lions. The discussion moves beyond abstract conservation policy to the lived experience of the community, whose warriors, once lion hunters, are now employed as monitors and protectors. The day concludes at a lodge on the crater rim.
