Southern Africa: Cape Town to Victoria Falls

The route covers approximately 500 kilometers, retracing the path westward and transitioning from the lowveld bush back to the highveld plateau. The majority of the day is dedicated to this significant road transfer, arriving in the city in the evening for an overnight stay.

A morning flight crosses the border from South Africa to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. This town sits on the southern bank of the Zambezi River, beside the falls known in the Lozi language as Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'The Smoke That Thunders.' The afternoon shifts focus to local life, beginning with a visit to a bustling market to shop for fresh ingredients. The evening is spent in a nearby village with a local family, providing a direct context for contemporary Zimbabwean culture. The experience culminates in helping to prepare and share a traditional home-cooked meal.

The day is dedicated to exploring the falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. A network of trails runs along the edge of the chasm opposite the main cataract, passing through a dense rainforest sustained by the constant spray. At 1.7 kilometers wide and 108 meters high, it forms the largest single sheet of falling water on the planet.
