Kruger in Depth

Arrive at any time at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) and make your way into the city. Most travelers base themselves in Sandton, the city's modern commercial hub. The day is for settling in before the long drive east tomorrow. An evening braai (a traditional South African barbecue) is a fitting introduction to the country.

An early start is essential for the long overland drive from Johannesburg to the Greater Kruger Area. The 500km journey takes most of the day, cutting east across the highveld provinces of Gauteng and Mpumalanga. A lunch stop breaks up the seven to eight hours on the road. Arrive at a lodge near the park in the late afternoon, with time to settle in before dinner.

The day begins with a guided two-hour bush walk in the Awelani Conservancy, a landscape dominated by baobab trees and other native plants. It’s a chance to focus on the smaller details of the ecosystem and a good area for birdwatching. After a picnic lunch and some rest back at the lodge, the afternoon shifts to a 4x4 safari drive in the northern part of Kruger, looking for elephants, buffalo, and hyenas. The day ends with a traditional braai dinner.

A full day dedicated to a classic safari drive through Kruger National Park. The main objective is tracking the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. The route covers significant ground, moving south through the park over nine to ten hours. It's a long day in the vehicle, scanning the bush, riverbeds, and waterholes for wildlife. The drive concludes in the late afternoon at a lodge near the town of Hazyview.

Another full day inside Kruger, this time in an open-sided 4x4 safari vehicle for a different perspective. The higher vantage point and lack of windows offer a more direct sensory connection to the bush. The six to seven-hour drive focuses on tracking animal movements, with a guide interpreting signs and sounds. The day finishes back near Hazyview with a traditional dinner and a local dance performance.

A free day based out of Hazyview to explore the region. The two main options are another safari drive back inside Kruger, or a full-day trip along the Panorama Route. This scenic drive traces the edge of the Great Escarpment and the Blyde River Canyon, with established viewpoints at God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, and the Three Rondavels.

The final morning in the Lowveld is spent at the Jane Goodall Institute's Chimp Eden, a sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees inside the Umhloti Nature Reserve. A guided tour of the facility explains the conservation work and introduces the resident chimps and their histories. From there, it's a four to five-hour drive west, climbing back onto the highveld and returning to Johannesburg. Arrive in the early evening for a final night in the city.

The trip concludes this morning in Johannesburg. There are no planned activities, leaving the day free for last-minute souvenir shopping or making your way to O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) for an onward flight.
