Southern Africa: Victoria Falls, Chobe, Kruger & Cape Town

Arrival is at Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) for the 180-kilometre overland journey to the Hwange National Park area. The drive takes around three hours, transitioning from the town outskirts into open country. The destination is Iganyana Tented Camp, a private property on a concession bordering the park itself, ensuring an immediate sense of quiet and isolation. The afternoon is spent settling in and acclimatizing to the sounds and rhythms of the Zimbabwean wilderness before dinner at the camp's lodge.

A full day is dedicated to exploring the private concession land adjacent to the main park, where fewer vehicles allow for quiet, intimate wildlife sightings. The day follows a classic safari rhythm, beginning with a morning drive in an open 4x4 vehicle to track game. As the sun climbs, there is a pause for coffee, tea, and biscuits in the bush. Lunch is served in the field, surrounded by the sights of the savannah. In the afternoon, the search for wildlife continues with another drive, timed to end at a scenic viewpoint. Here, a traditional sundowner drink and snacks are served as the light changes over the savannah, offering a quiet moment with a drink in hand. The day concludes with a return to Iganyana Tented Camp for dinner, completing the day's journey on the concession.

Today’s drives venture into the public grounds of Hwange National Park, an area renowned for its immense elephant population, particularly around the permanent waterholes. The early morning start provides the best light and the highest chance of seeing predators before the day heats up. The scale of the park becomes apparent here, with vast plains and mopane woodlands stretching to the horizon.

The middle of the day is for rest back at the lodge, a practical concession to the African heat. A swim or a quiet hour on a shaded deck is followed by high tea. The day concludes with another drive into the park, watching the landscape and its inhabitants during the golden hour before sunset.

The morning involves a private overland journey from the quiet of Hwange back to the town of Victoria Falls. After checking into The Waterfall Lodge, the afternoon is unstructured. This time can be used for independent exploration or for arranging one of the area's signature activities, such as a helicopter flight over the gorge or a sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi River. The evening is centered around a performance of the Simunye show, an open-air theatrical production, followed by dinner.

The day is dedicated to the falls, starting with a guided walk along the network of trails in the rainforest opposite the Eastern Cataract. The path offers a sequence of viewpoints, each revealing a different aspect of the mile-wide curtain of water. In the afternoon, there is a choice of activity. One option is a historical tour of the Victoria Falls Bridge, focusing on its ambitious engineering. The other is a hands-on cooking experience with the Lusumpuko Women’s Club, a local cooperative, offering insight into traditional Zimbabwean cuisine. Dinner is a riverside meal of potjie, slow-cooked stews prepared in cast-iron pots over an open fire.

A morning departure from Victoria Falls leads to the Kazungula border, a modern bridge and one-stop post for the crossing into Botswana. The first encounter with Chobe National Park is from the water. A river cruise on a small vessel navigates the shoreline, a prime vantage point for the large herds of elephants that come to drink, as well as resident hippos and crocodiles. Lunch is served on a floating raft restaurant on the river. The day ends with a safari drive through the park to a private Meru-style tented camp, arriving in time for sunset.

The day offers two distinct perspectives on Chobe's ecosystem. It begins with an early morning safari drive in an open 4x4, exploring the park's interior tracks when predators are most active. The journey transitions from the wilderness of Botswana to South Africa's largest metropolis. A morning departure from Kasane Airport (BBK) connects via a direct flight to Johannesburg (JNB). The base for the night is the Southern Sun Rosebank, located in the leafy suburb of Rosebank. After settling in, the evening shifts to the Sandton district. Dinner is at a local restaurant in Nelson Mandela Square, a modern hub of commerce and culture.

A short flight from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit serves as the gateway to the Greater Kruger region. The destination is Pridelands, a 4,500-acre conservancy that was once a buffalo hunting farm. The next two days are an immersive experience hosted by instructors from Eco-training, Africa's most accredited guide training school. The first afternoon is spent on a safari drive with these experts, learning not just to spot wildlife but to interpret animal behaviour and tracking signs. The day ends with a sundowner and a traditional bush braai (barbecue) under the stars.

The day begins at dawn with a walking safari, an entirely different sensory experience from a vehicle-based drive. On foot, accompanied by armed Eco-training guides, the focus shifts to the smaller details of the ecosystem: identifying tracks, understanding plant uses, and learning the protocols for safely navigating big game territory. Breakfast is served out in the bush. After a rest during the midday heat, the afternoon safari drive focuses on situational awareness around large animals, culminating in an al fresco dinner at a viewpoint by the Ndlovu Dam.

Pridelands Conservancy hosts the final morning walking safari before the journey continues into Kruger National Park to reach Mdluli Safari Lodge. This community-owned property is situated on a private concession, which allows for a sunset safari drive along its private road network after settling in. The evening concludes with a traditional bush braai served in the lodge's open-air boma, a circular enclosure, with the sounds of the surrounding park providing the backdrop for dinner.

The day adheres to the classic safari rhythm, dictated by the movements of the animals. It begins with an early guided bush walk, providing an intimate, ground-level perspective on Kruger's terrain. After returning to the lodge for breakfast, the hot middle of the day is free. This is time for the infinity pool, which overlooks the park, or for simply watching for wildlife from a shaded deck. Accommodation is at the Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel & Spa. The evening is anchored by a three-course dinner at the hotel's acclaimed Helena’s Restaurant, known for its heritage-inspired cuisine.

A day spent exploring the vineyards between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. There is a choice of activity: a guided e-bike ride that makes the rolling hills manageable, or a hike through several wine estates, starting from Zorgvliet. Both routes visit two different farms for tastings before converging at the historic Boschendal Wine Farm. Here, a picnic lunch is served on the estate's expansive lawns. The afternoon is then left open, providing time to explore the oak-lined streets and Cape Dutch architecture of Stellenbosch independently.

A short morning drive from Stellenbosch opens up the classic loop around the Cape Peninsula. The route traces the False Bay coast first, passing the colourful seaside towns of St James and Kalk Bay before reaching Boulders Beach to see its famous colony of African penguins. From here, the road cuts across the peninsula via the Ou Kaapse Weg pass, offering wide views before descending to Hout Bay. The return to Cape Town follows Chapman’s Peak Drive, a road carved directly into the cliffside and considered one of the world's most scenic coastal drives. The day ends at The Portswood Hotel near the V&A Waterfront, followed by dinner at Karibu Restaurant.

The morning is spent ascending Table Mountain. The rotating aerial cableway provides 360-degree views on the way to the summit, where walking trails offer perspectives over the city, coastline, and peninsula. Back at sea level, the afternoon starts with a 'Footsteps of Freedom' walking tour through the city's historic core, from the colourful houses of Bo-Kaap to the Grand Parade and Company Gardens. The walk concludes with a hands-on Cape Malay cooking class, focused on staples like samosas, roti, and curry. The dishes prepared become the evening's farewell dinner.

The morning in Cape Town begins with breakfast, leaving the rest of the day open for departure. Cape Town International Airport (CPT) serves as the departure point, accommodating flight schedules at any time throughout the day. The transition from Cape Town to the CPT terminal can be planned to align precisely with individual departure times, ensuring a smooth conclusion to the journey.
