This itinerary connects Southern Africa’s keystone wildlife destinations—Hwange, Chobe, and Kruger—with the refined landscapes of the Cape Winelands. It’s designed for the traveler who understands the logistical complexity of a multi-country safari and prefers to offload it. The value is in the seamless transitions: private charters, handled border formalities, and luggage that appears at the next lodge. It trades the friction of self-planning a four-country trip for a continuous narrative, from Big Five tracking to vineyard lunches in Stellenbosch.

A 17-day route from the mist of Victoria Falls to Cape Town's coast, connecting premier wildlife reserves in Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa with the vineyards of the Western Cape.

The Route, Day by Day

Each leg of the journey mapped out — where the day takes you, what's actually on the ground, and things to consider when planning this tour.

Day 1 of 17

Hwange National Park

Arrival in Zimbabwe & Hwange Welcome

Arrival is at Victoria Falls Airport, with a private vehicle waiting for the overland journey into the bush. The drive to Hwange National Park takes around three hours, transitioning from town to open country. The destination is a private tented camp on a concession bordering the park, ensuring an immediate sense of quiet and isolation upon arrival. The day is about settling in and acclimatizing to the sounds and rhythms of the Zimbabwean wilderness before dinner.

Day at a glance

  • Arrive at Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) for the onward transfer.
  • Private overland transfer (approx. 180km) to the Hwange area.
  • Accommodation: Iganyana Tented Camp, a private property near the park.
  • Dinner at the camp's lodge.
  • Meal included: Dinner.

DIY Reality Check: The 180-kilometer transfer from Victoria Falls to the private concessions bordering Hwange National Park is the first operational challenge. A DIY traveler must source and vet a reliable vehicle and driver, navigating a market of private transfers with varying safety standards and reliability. The main A8 highway is paved, but the final approach to remote camps like Iganyana often involves unpaved, rugged tracks where a standard sedan may be unsuitable, adding another layer of vehicle-specific vetting. Coordinating this long-distance transfer to align perfectly with both a flight arrival and the camp's check-in schedule introduces significant logistical risk. A pre-arranged overland transfer as part of a larger itinerary removes the burden of sourcing, vetting, and coordinating this multi-part journey.

Day 2 of 17

Hwange National Park

Tracking Wildlife on a Private Concession

A full day is dedicated to exploring the private concession land adjacent to the main park. This means fewer vehicles and more intimate wildlife sightings. The day follows a classic safari rhythm, beginning with a morning drive in an open 4x4 with an expert guide who can interpret the smallest signs of animal activity, from tracks to broken branches. There is a pause for coffee in the bush as the sun climbs.

After a bush lunch, the search for game continues with an afternoon drive. This drive is timed to end at a scenic viewpoint for a sundowner, a fixed tradition in the safari world. It’s a quiet moment to watch the light change over the savannah with a drink in hand before returning to camp for dinner.

Day 3 of 17

Hwange National Park

Into the Heart of Hwange

Today’s drives venture into the public grounds of Hwange National Park, an area renowned for its immense elephant population, particularly around the permanent waterholes. The early morning start provides the best light and the highest chance of seeing predators before the day heats up. The scale of the park becomes apparent here, with vast plains and mopane woodlands stretching to the horizon.

The middle of the day is for rest back at the lodge, a practical concession to the African heat. A swim or a quiet hour on a shaded deck is followed by high tea. The day concludes with another drive into the park, watching the landscape and its inhabitants during the golden hour before sunset.
