South Africa's Kruger National Park

The expedition begins upon arrival in Johannesburg, followed by an overland transfer to a hotel in the city's modern commercial hub. The evening is for settling in and acclimatizing to the highveld climate before the journey into the country's interior begins.

The day begins at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg, a non-profit archival and research institution housed in the former leader's post-presidential office, where the working spaces shaped his later legacy. From Johannesburg, a short flight leads to Hoedspruit, the gateway to the private reserves bordering Kruger National Park. The accommodation is Thornybush Game Lodge, situated within the private Thornybush reserve. An afternoon safari drive in the private Thornybush reserve explores this habitat, which is central to regional carnivore conservation efforts, particularly those targeting cheetahs and wild dogs. This safari drive highlights the application of conservation principles directly in the field. The day concludes with dinner served at Thornybush Game Lodge.

A full day is dedicated to the ecology of the Thornybush private reserve, structured around the diurnal rhythms of the local fauna. The morning begins with an early safari drive, the prime period for observing predator activity in the cooler temperatures. Returning to Thornybush Game Lodge for breakfast, the midday hours offer quiet downtime, with the option to undertake a guided walking safari for a granular, ground-level sensory experience of the bush. After lunch and a traditional high tea, the afternoon safari drive commences, continuing past sunset into the twilight hours. This late-day excursion offers a rare opportunity to track nocturnal species as they begin to emerge, before returning to the lodge for dinner.

A final morning safari drive through the Thornybush private reserve precedes the overland journey east toward Kruger National Park. The route pauses in Hazyview at the Shabalala Interpretation of Culture Centre, which documents and presents the performance and material culture of the local Swati people. The day's destination is Kruger Shalati - The Train on the Bridge, a restored train converted into a lodge that is permanently situated on the historic Selati Bridge spanning the Sabie River. From this elevated vantage point, the afternoon begins with a safari drive inside the boundaries of Kruger National Park, South Africa's oldest and largest public sanctuary. This experience contrasts the managed private reserve of Thornybush with the vast scale of the national park.

The day is devoted to an intensive exploration of the southern section of Kruger National Park. Two safari drives, scheduled for the morning and afternoon, cover the highly varied biomes surrounding the Skukuza region. This route transitions from the dense riverine forest along the Sabie River to mixed woodland and open grassland, with each distinct habitat supporting a different assemblage of species. The midday break is spent at the lodge, Kruger Shalati - The Train on the Bridge, where the elevated platform over the Sabie River provides an exceptional vantage point for observing hippo, crocodile, and other animals in the water below. The day concludes not at the lodge itself, but with dinner served in a dedicated bush dining location under the stars, offering an immersive experience of the park's nocturnal environment.

After a final breakfast overlooking the Sabie River, the expedition concludes with an overland journey to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport. A flight returns to Johannesburg, where the trip formally ends. Onward international travel should be scheduled for after 7 PM.
