South Africa: Kruger, Cape Town & Stellenbosch

Arrival is at O.R. Tambo International Airport, the gateway to South Africa's largest city. From the airport, head to the Rosebank district to check in at the Southern Sun Rosebank. This upscale neighbourhood serves as a quiet, art-focused entry point to the city. The remainder of the day is set aside for settling in at the hotel, allowing time to unpack, rest after the journey, and ease into the local pace before the exploration begins.

A morning flight connects Johannesburg to Hoedspruit, the gateway town for the Greater Kruger area. From there, a short drive leads to Pridelands, a 4,500-acre conservancy that was once a buffalo hunting farm. The next two days are an immersion in field guiding with instructors from EcoTraining, one of Africa's most respected guide schools.

The first afternoon is spent on a 4x4 safari drive, learning to identify animal tracks and interpret behaviour in the wild. As dusk approaches, the drive pauses for sundowner drinks in the bush before returning to the lodge for a traditional South African braai.

The day begins at dawn with a walking safari, tracking elephant, buffalo, and zebra on foot. This ground-level perspective offers a completely different sensory experience of the bush. Breakfast is served out in the open within the bush, with wildlife moving freely in the distance. After a midday break to escape the heat at Raptors Lodge, an afternoon safari drive focuses on animal behaviour and identification. The day concludes with an al fresco dinner served at the Ndlovu Dam, maximizing time spent out among the sounds of the conservancy after dark.

After a final morning walking safari in the Pridelands, an overland journey heads deeper into the region and across the boundary into Kruger National Park itself. The destination is the Mdluli Safari Lodge, a private, community-owned property inside the park’s southwestern fence line, which offers a more secluded safari experience than the public camps.

Check-in is followed by the first game drive inside Kruger, exploring the lodge's private road network. The drive concludes with sundowners at a scenic viewpoint as the light fades. Dinner is a traditional bush braai, served in the lodge's open-air boma under the stars.

The day follows the classic rhythm of a Kruger safari. It starts with another early guided bush walk, a chance to focus on the park's smaller details—tracks, plants, and insects—that are often missed from a vehicle. After the walk and a full breakfast, the middle of the day is free for downtime at the lodge, whose infinity pool overlooks the park.

In the late afternoon, as the temperature drops and animals become more active, a second safari drive explores the Mdluli concession, focusing on a nearby watering hole. It's a prime location for observing wildlife, followed by sundowners before returning to the lodge for dinner.

The day transitions from the bushveld to the vineyard, beginning with a short walk to Granite Rock for a picnic breakfast with 360-degree views over Kruger. An overland drive follows to Nelspruit's airport for the flight south to Cape Town. From the airport, the route leads directly into the Cape Winelands and the historic town of Stellenbosch. Accommodation is at Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel & Spa. Dinner is a three-course meal at Helena’s Restaurant, located within the hotel. The menu focuses on heritage Cape cuisine, executed with modern finesse and a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients.

Today is for exploring the valleys between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. There is a choice of activity: a guided e-bike ride through the farmlands or a dedicated hiking route through the vineyards. Both options include stops at two different wine estates for tastings of the local Chenin Blanc and Pinotage.

The routes converge at Boschendal, one of the Cape's oldest and most recognized wine farms. Lunch is a pre-arranged picnic on the estate's expansive lawns. The remainder of the afternoon is free to explore the oak-lined streets and Cape Dutch architecture of Stellenbosch at your own pace.

The morning begins with a short drive from Stellenbosch, transitioning into a full-day scenic journey around the Cape Peninsula. The route traces the False Bay coastline, passing through the seaside villages of St James and Kalk Bay before stopping at Boulders Beach, where a series of boardwalks offers views of the protected African penguin colony. From there, the drive cuts through the heart of the peninsula, crossing the Ou Kaapse Weg mountain pass before winding down to the Atlantic coast at Hout Bay. The day's driving culminates along Chapman’s Peak Drive, a dramatic road carved directly into the cliffside, before arriving in Cape Town. Dinner is at Karibu Restaurant on the V&A Waterfront, with accommodations at The Portswood Hotel.

The morning begins with an ascent of Table Mountain via the rotating aerial cableway, which provides 360-degree views on the way to the summit. From the top, the perspective covers the entire city bowl, Robben Island, and the coastline. Back at sea level, a guided walking tour explores the city's complex history, visiting sites like the Castle of Good Hope, the Grand Parade, and the colourful houses of the Bo-Kaap.

The afternoon is a hands-on immersion in the city's unique Cape Malay culture. A cooking class focuses on local staples, teaching the techniques for folding samosas and preparing traditional curries and rotis. The day ends with a farewell dinner, enjoying the food prepared in class.

The journey concludes this morning in Cape Town. After a final breakfast at the hotel, there are no scheduled activities, allowing for a flexible departure. Airport transfers can be arranged according to individual flight times.
