Nairobi to Zanzibar: Serengeti & Sunsets

Land in Nairobi, grab your bags, and get to the hotel. The first night is for settling in and meeting the rest of the crew, likely at the hotel bar. It's a chill night to get acquainted before the early start tomorrow.

It's an early start for a long day on the road. The shuttle heads south across the semi-arid lands of the Maasai people, making for the Tanzanian border. The crossing itself is straightforward. Keep an eye out for views of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance as you make your way to Arusha, the gateway city for the safari circuit.

Today is what you came for. Swap the shuttle for specialized 4x4 safari vehicles and head into Serengeti National Park. The drive takes you into the vast golden plains, dotted with acacia trees and hippo-filled rivers. This is the start of a three-day, two-night excursion into the park, beginning with an afternoon wildlife drive. Tonight, you'll camp inside the park itself, with the sounds of the savannah all around.

Wake up for one last morning safari drive through the Serengeti as the sun comes up and the animals get active. After the drive, the crew breaks down camp and heads toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The destination is a campsite near the crater rim, with wide-open views of the caldera below. You'll set up camp in the late afternoon, leaving the rest of the day to watch the landscape from above. It gets cold at this altitude, so have extra layers ready for the evening.

An early start gets you down to the Ngorongoro Crater floor for a final safari drive. The crater walls create a self-contained ecosystem of grasslands, swamps, and acacia forests, making wildlife sightings frequent. This is your best shot at seeing a huge density of animals in one place. By late morning, you'll exit the crater and begin the drive back to Arusha, stopping for a traditional lunch at a community-run project in Mto wa Mbu on the way.

It's another long travel day, leaving Arusha early for the coast. The route heads towards Bagamoyo, a historic port town on the Indian Ocean. You might get one last glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro as you drive east, watching the landscape shift from the highlands to the tropical coastline. This is an overnight stop before the final push to Dar es Salaam and the Zanzibar ferry tomorrow.

After a short drive from Bagamoyo to the port in Dar es Salaam, you'll catch the public ferry across to Zanzibar. The destination is Stone Town, the island's historic heart. Drop your bags at the hotel and head out for a quick orientation walk to get your bearings in the maze of narrow alleyways. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore the markets, grab a coffee, and get a feel for the island's unique blend of African and Arabic culture.

The morning is free to get lost in Stone Town's historic alleys. Check out the massive carved wooden doors, the antique shops, and the markets selling spices and colorful textiles. It's a great place to wander without a plan. In the afternoon, the group transfers across the island to Jambiani, a classic backpacker beach spot known for its white sand and turquoise water. Settle in and get on island time.

Today is a full-on beach day with no fixed plans. You can organize a snorkeling or diving trip, go for a sail on a traditional dhow, or just find a spot on the sand and do nothing at all. Jambiani has an active but relaxed beach scene, with plenty of small bars and restaurants along the water. The day is yours to spend however you want before the trip wraps up.

After a final morning on the beach, it's time to pack up and head back across the island to Stone Town. The trip officially ends upon arrival in the late morning, giving you time to catch an afternoon flight out.
